Based on explaining its meaning, according to the attribute about colleges＂ ＂ecostate＂ and ＂ecorole＂, the niche of colleges and universities was divided into three layers： the living force, the developing force, and the competition force, and was also anatomized into seven corresponding dimensions： the ability of teaching, the ability of research, the ability of social service, the ability of interface management, the ability of strategic management, the ability of resources management and the ability of learning innovation. An index system to estimate the niche of colleges and universities was set up. In addition, a comprehensive method was put forward for estimating the niche. At last, an example was also presented to illustrate the validity of the proposed method.
