The accurate characterization of surface topography has become increasingly important in many fields, such as materials science, the biomedical industry, tribology, and machine condition monitoring. A new approach to gain surface parameters to characterize worn surfaces using confocal laser scanning microscopy and image processing technique was proposed. Bio-rad Radiance 2000 confocal laser scanning microscopy is firstly used to acquire appropriate 3D surface topography. Computerized image analysis techniques are then adopted to quantify surface parameters, An application example on engineering surfaces was presented to demonstrate that the developed method can be used to describe surface characteristics reliably and precisely.
