The development process of urban river regulation, including primary phase, engineering phase and environmental phase at home and abroad was introduced. Taking Shanghai region for example, the problems existing in the present urban river regulation at home and abroad were discussed from aspects of river function location, regulation goal, existing problems, regulation measures, environmental impact assessment and subsequent environmental monitoring. Based on this, the scientific setting of regulation goal, the implementation of comprehensive method, the application of adaptive management, the development of catchment scale and widely public participation were presented as the main trends of river regulation in the future.
