It is well established that quartz tuning forks can be used as sensors for acoustic and force microscopy. These self-oscillating high mechanical quality factor sensors provide a good method of detecting sub-pN forces especially at low temperature. This paper introduces the conceptions of effective mass and effective Yang module to simplify the calculation of the resonance frequency. Furthermore, a simplified model based on some theoretical analysis is set up to explain most of the experimental results and provide us another image of how the quartz tuning fork works.
