A generic frame for evaluating the sustainability rural household livelihoods based on ‘pressure-state-response＇model was established after analyzing the concept and frame of sustainable livelihoods. A multilayer index system was constructed from four aspects including vulnerability context pressure, livelihoods assets state, institutions and processes and livelihood strategies responses. Calculation methods for single index and composite evaluation were proposed. It is of theoretical and practical significance to scientifically evaluate sustainability of rural household livelihoods for ensuring security of rural households livelihoods and promoting sustainable development of rural areas.
