As a kind of global environmental contaminants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous in environment. Due to its persistency, long distance transportation, bioaccumulation potential in organisms and adverse effects on wildlife and human health, investigations on the environment concerns of PBDEs have rapidly increased in last decade. This paper summarizes the advances on study of PBDEs in recent years. Recent data on the environment distributions, time trends, human exposure and route, degradation and biotransformation, and bioaceumulation of PBDEs are reviewed. The currently knowledge gaps and critical areas of research that warrant further attention are also discussed and provided.
