Left ventricular remodeling is the process by which ventricular size, shape, and function are regulated by different mechanical, neurohormonal, and genetic factors.Matrixmetalloproteinases, an important proteinase family which is primary mediator to degrade the extracellular matrix.The normal expression of matrix metalloproteinases and a appropriate MMPs/ TIMPs ( tissue inhibitors of the matrix metalloproteinases ) ratio are important factors to maintain natural cardiac structure.Further research of MMPs will provide the new theory basis for clinical practice.
