Epimedium is one of the most common and effective traditional Chinese medicine to treat osteoporosis. Its mechanism of action on MSCs has gradually been confirmed. MSCs are pluripotent precursor cells of the osteoblast and the osteoclast. In addition to a multi-directional differentiation potential, MSCs are also characterized of immune suppressive regulating function. The application of MSCs has many advantages, including wide source availability, convenient extraction, rapid in vitro proliferation, and easy bone induction. Thus, Epimedium has been known as a good accelerator for MSCs differentiation into osteoblasts. MSCs provide an ideal source of seed cells for bone tissue engineering and cell therapy.
