Obesity has become a global health issue across all age groups and ethnics groups. Hundreds of candidate genes for obesity susceptibility including phosphotriesterase related gene (PTER)have been identified. PTER is highly expressed in adipose tissue, consequently implying a role in the accumulation of fat mass, and significantly associated with the degree of obesity and other obesity-related traits. Its variant, the single nucleotide polymorphism(rs10508503),does seem to influence obesity and obesity-related traits in the general population. Otherwise, PTER shows suggestive evidence for linkage of serum leptin levels. The relationship between PTER, obesity and leptin are reviewed in this paper.
