Adenine nucleotide transporter (ANT) is a nuclear-encoded protein, which located on the inner membrane of mitochondria. ANT catalyzes the import of cytosolic ADP and the export of matrix ATP with identical rate during physiological state. Dysfunction of the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier can result in severe disorders such as dilated cardiomyopathy, progressive external ophthalmo, etc. However, ANT also constitutes a core component of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore and is related to the apoptosis.
