Base on the longwall coal mining with coal pillars applied in the medium and small coal mines in the Shaanbei Coal Field, the technical targets to prevent and reduce the mine disasters are to classify two different feature coal pillars. They are the coal pillars within the mining section and the coal pillars between the coal mining sections. Those coal pillars arc to have no disaster roof failure in the mining section and to prevent a large area roof failing between the mining sections during the mining operations. A ＂ design-diagnosis-monitoting and measuring-identification-countermeasures＂ system to prevent a large roof accident was established.
