In the design of the final pit for Jiajiapu mine of Benxi Iron and Steel Company,a software package,SmartMiner,was used to optimize the final pit and to conduct pit-limit analyses.This case study indicates that application of optimization can play an important role in obtaining the best final-pit design,and the pit has a high sensitivity with respect to economical conditions（product price in particular）when the objective is to maximize the total economic gain.Pit-limit analysis is also a valuable procedure in determining the phase pit limits.
