Ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni--Mn--Ga is a new class of functional material showing large strain under applied magnetic field. This paper studies the crystal structure and the magnetic--field--induced strain of Ni--Mn --Ga alloy and expounds that the reason of large magnetic--field--induced strain is the motion of the martensitic twins with the O'Handley's analytic models.
