Being a by-product and a heavy burden of municipal wastewater treatment plants, wastewater sludge has been treated and disposed as a waste so far. However, the high content of lipid in the sludge can be converted by methanolysis to fatty acid methyl/ethyl esters, which are the main compo- nents of the biodieseh As a clean renewable fuel, the biodiesel is a kind of green energy which is friendly to the environment. The feasibility of wastewater sludge as feedstock for biodiesel production, the factors affecting biodiesel productivity and the economic cost of biodiesel production from the wastewater sludge were summarized. The current problems and prospects for biodiesel production from the wastewater sludge were expounded.
