Many important transcriptional regulatory proteins can be modified by SUMO (small ubiquitinrelated modifier), including transcription factors, transcription cofactors and chromatin-modifying enzymes. SUMOylation can modify protein activity and in most cases promote transcriptional repression. Recent reports show that SUMOylation promotes the interactions between transcriptional activators and inhibitors. In addition, it has been found that transcriptional co-repressors HDAC ( histone deacetylase ) can be functioned as substrates, effectors, and regulators of SUMOylation, showing that the complex relationship between acetylation and SUMOylation is important for gene regulation.
