A total of 390 fish individuals was collected from fish markets and supermarkets in 13 cities of Guangdong Province and analyzed for dichlorodiphenyhrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites, including o, p'-and p, p'-DDT, DDE, DDD(designated as DDTs). The concentrations of DDTs ranged from 8.7 to 18, 002ng·g^-1 lipid or from 0.1 to 698.9 ng·g^-1 wet weight. Large difference of DDTs residue level among different fishes was attributed to their living and feeding habits. Overall, only two fish flesh samples contained higher DDTs levels than China's maximum permissible limits set forth for foodstuff, about 0.51% of the total samples. However, 13.8 and 30.5%, respectively of the fish samples exceeded the advisory limits for human consumption recommended by the Europe Union and US EPA. The daily intake of DDTs by residents of Guangdong Province via fish consumption was 30.8ng·kg body weight^-1 ·day^-1 and only 0.3% of the acceptable daily intake established by FAO/WHO; nevertheless, it was higher than those obtained in other regions around the world.
