Coral reef around Weizhou Island is one of the fringing reefs in southern China. By the coral reef ecological survey in 2005, status data of coral reef of Weizhou Island were updated after 20 more years of the former survey in 1964 and 1984. A checklist of reef-building corals was presented to compare the existing species among 1964, 1984 and 2005. There were 32, 35 and 14 species recorded in 1964, 1984 and 2005 respectively, which manifest serious biodiversity loss in the past two decades. The distribution area and percentage cover of live reef-building corals have also decreased markedly in comparison with those of 1960s and 1980s, indicating the degradation of the coral reefs in the island. At present, the average percentage cover of live reef-building corals is only 23.8 %. Even worse, very few (〈1% coverage) reef-building corals were observed from the east coastal area of the island. The reasons for coral reef degradation were also discussed. The establishment of coral reef reserve was strongly recommended in order to protect and restore the coral reef in Weizhou Island.
