The extraction of brown map is significant to realize the completely automatic digitization of topographical maps. On account of the color scanned topographical map, an extraction method, which combines OTSU and FCM clustering algorithm, is presented, and the result of a practical example validates the algorithm＇s feasibility and effectiveness. From the mathematical view, the definition of segmentation and the method of color separation have been described and analyzed.
