The common synthetic methods, characterization means and applications of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were introduced in this paper. CQDs are a new type of fluorescent nano-materials which are composed of carbon element. The CQDs have lots of advantages, such as excellent optical property, low cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility, feasible functionalization, low cost, etc.. They have been showing a broad development prospect in the fields of biology and medicine.
