The memorial archway can be divided into commendation memorial archway and identification memorial archway, due to the different reasons of recognition and contents. The memorial archway can be further subdivided into the official reputation memorial archway, the imperial examinations memorial archway, the behavior recognition memorial archway and the auspicious memorial archway. Based on an analysis of the form and the scale of the memorial archway in Quan- zhou, it is found that the higher the class of memorial archway, the closer its rela- tionship with its contemporary regime, the greater degree of its publicity, the more active social situation it symbolizes, and the more likely for it to be found in the urban central district. The memorial archway as a system matches its contemporary political establishment and helps shape landscape of traditional cities.
