The development, stratification mechanism, prediction theories, formulation, the influencing factors of stratification and the methods of characterization of self-stratification coatings are introduced and summarized. Several fluorine-containing polymers and their applications in self-stratifying coatings are described, and the prospect of functionalized gradient materials is pointed.
