The development of novel cathode materials with excellent electrochemical performance is very im portant to reduce the cost of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this review article, new cathode systems being investigated for application in SOFCs are discussed. For the cathode materials, materials with the perovskite or related structures continue to dominate the field, due to the need for high electronic conductivity. Recently, research in this field is being directed toward compositions allowing high ionic conductivity in addition to their electronic contribution. A site ordering double layered perovskite oxides with excellent oxide ion conductivity, especially, materials allowing the incorporation of oxygen excess into interstitial sites have shown promising results.
