A low bound for the first eigenvalue of the following degenerate elliptic equation {-n∑ij=1(e)/(e)xj(aij(x)|▽u|p-2(e)u/(e)xi)+c(x)up-1=λup-1,x∈Ω,u=0,x∈(e)Ω,is obtained.The result is very useful in using maximum and comparison principles to study the properties solutions of partial differential equations.
