Sign language production is a process in which the deaf communicate ideas by means of handshape change, as well as corresponding facial expressions and gestures. The core process of sign language production is lexical access, which consists of lexical selection （semantic retrieval） and phonetic encoding （phonological retrieval）. The factors that have an effect on sign language production include the age of acquisition, iconicity, phonological similarity, the location of the handshape, and brain lateralization.
