Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)have been banned in some countries, and pentaBDE and octaBDE were listed in Part I of Annex A of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) in 2009. However, toxicological effects and toxicological mechanism of PBDEs have been still unclear, especially on toxicological effects of PBDEs at environmentally relevant doses. In this paper, we review recent research progress in toxicology study on PBDEs from three aspects including thyroid disruption, neurotoxicity and reproductive endocrine disruption, discuss several problems in this research field. Furthermore, we make a point that toxicological study of PBDEs and their metabolites at environmentally relevant doses should be strengthened to improve the understanding of PBDEs toxicities in actual environment. We also suggest that some non-invasive biomarkers indicating PBDEs toxicity should be established to provide clues for epidemiological study on health effects of PBDEs.
