To assist a weakened or failing heart, direct cardiac assist devices wrap around the epicardial surface and gently squeeze the blood out of the heart. This kind research and development are important because it can avoid thromboembolic events and blood infection, which are common to the current heart assist devices. The actuators determine the structure, shape, and performances of direct cardiac assist devices, and therefore is the key for development. Any breakthrough in the actuator technology could potentially have revolutionary influence on the device development. Therefore, this paper reviews the actuator technologies of direct cardiac assist devices and their problems.
