The paper makes a brief introduction about the development and practice of sustainability assessment, states the relationship between sustainability aassessment and urban planning, demonstrates the basic concept, main contents, working program and technical method of sustainability assessment. Then, the paper takes the sustainability assessment of strategy for Shenzhen urban development as an example, it showed the application of sustainability assessment method. Finally, with the discussion about urban planning environmental impact assessment in contemporary China, this article explores the trend for Chinese urban planning to launch sustainability assessment in the future.
