Information from GPS, AIS, Radar, VTS and other aids to navigation is of ' big data' feature. In order to ex- plore the data for valuable hidden information, the data need to be visualized. The maritime traffic information visualization techniques will provide maritime supervisors with a powerful technical means to grasp the features of the maritime traffic flow, to analyze the behavior of vessels, assess navigation risks and so on. The progress of visualization techniques in mari- time traffic information presentation is reviewed, covering the key techniques and tools applied to information visualization, including data processing, visual presentation, human-computer interaction. The tasks and typical applications of maritime traffic information visualization are described, covering trajectory visualization, density visualization and attribution visualization. The prospects of maritime traffic information visualization and the challenges it faces are analyzed.
