This article discusses the epistemology and practice regarding the preservation, renovation and revitalization of historic places in radical urban development. Taking Beijing's modern urban transformation as an example, it compares the different expression of modernity in the urban renewal process between China and the West, teases out their respective patterns of civilization and stages of evolution underlying such difference, and reflects on the Chinese mode that possesses clear influence from the West, and deals with the real social problems in China. The article further calls for a fundamental rethinking of the practice by establishing a constructive relationship between conservation and development. The article ends with a case study of the project designed by Chang Qing Studio which attempt to explore a more sophisticated method of historic preservation and renovation in a local context.
