Breeding of dwarf rice varieties and their wide use in production is one of the greatest achievements in rice breeding in the 20^th century. The authors reviewed the progresses in the research on the inheritance, localization, cloning and functions of dwarf genes and the mechanism of dwarfness in rice. The existing problems and deyeloping prospects in breeding of dwarf rice varieties were also discussed in the paper.
