This paper develops a conceptual model about the contingent effects of responsive and proactive market orientation on innovation performance. Using survey data from 210 manufacturers, our empirical results indicate that both responsive and proactive market orientation have positive effects on innovation performance. Demand turbulence will weaken the positive effects of responsive market orientation, but strengthen the positive effects of proactive market orientation. Relational competence will increase the positive effects of proactive market orientation, while it has no moderating effect on the relationship between responsive market orientation and innovation performance.
