The effectiveness of ship braking maneuvering is an important index to assess entire performance of a ship. Ships of different type and tonnage apply different braking methods that are involved in ships＇ safety directly. By using ship maneuvering simulator and setting up tested conditions, the various ship braking tests such as reverse braking, Z-maneuver braking, full helm braking, dragging and tug-assistant braking etc. are carried and their effectiveness is compared. The comparison indicates the advantages and disadvantages of various braking and also their applicable situations. The results are useful for officers to take correct actions in ship maneuvering.
