The issue of " comfort women" for Japan is one left over from the Second World War. Ever since its revelation in the early 1990s, especially with the release of the Kono Statement in 1993, it has received intense concerns from the international community, particularly from Asian countries. Today, the Japanese government, which should take re- sponsibility for the misery it inflicted on its neighbours 70 years ago, neither admitted nor compensated for this crime. In- stead, Japan has been doing its utmost to disavow and distort history. This is closely related to the rightist trend in Japanese society in matters of principles, such as how to face its aggression history and how to bear its war responsibility. Only by admitting its war crimes in history can the Japanese government hope to have the forgiveness and understanding of the world's peace-loving people.
