This thesis offers a detailed introduction to Hauser, Chomsky and Fitch's "core computational system of recursion" hypothesis which led to a heated debate on the faculty of language in Cognition. This'work is based on the publications, together with discussions with Chomsky and some of the other main parties to the debate during the author's visit to MIT. One of the central findings is that the focus of the debate is neither on "the recursion-only hypothesis", nor on "the computational system", but on whether "the computational system of recursion" is unique to human language. Apart from their different opinions, the controversy is found to derive mainly from the different perspectives of the discussants. The debate on the faculty of language contributes not only to the development of linguistics itself, but also to the progress of some other neighbouring disciplines which interface with linguistics.
