Autophagy is a complex system to maintain the dynamic cycles of matter and energy, and is an important way for the cytoplasmic components to be delivered to and degraded in the lysosome. Autophagy is regulated by the intracellular signaling networks and induced by different types of nutrient limitations, plays crucial role in the synthesis and degradation of cellular materials, energy supply and cell signaling, those are very important for the cell self renewal and homeostasis. Abnormalities of autophagy may be a key factor that contributes to the occurrence of many diseases. Therefore, the researches on the inherent characteristics and regulation mechanisms of autophagy will help to explore the new methods of diagnosis and treatment for the diseases.
