Kupffer cells, liver-resident macrophages, serve as the first protective barrier in liver and are also respon- sible for the release of inflammatory mediators contributing to the development of various liver disorders. With the altera- tion of human' s living habits and dietary structure, the increasing prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is gaining its worldwide concern. However, the pathogenesis of NAFLD and the corresponding treatment need further explorations. In recent years, accumulating evidence suggests that kupffer cells play crucial roles in NAFLD. This review summarizes the resent research progresses that have been made on the involvement of KCs in NAFLD.
