Multi-center of urban spatial structure is the main direction of the study of urban. At the same time, manufacturing is the main driving force to promote the development of urban space to multi polarization especially in these cities that directly participate in the global competition. Analyzing spatial structure and determinants of manufacturing employments is helpful to understand the micro driving mechanism of the spatial structure evolution of metropolitan area. In this paper, we use the data of manufacturing enterprises in 1996, 2004 and 2008 with the sub-district as the research unit to analyze the spatial distribution of the manufacturing and use econometric model to explore the determinants in Shanghai metropolitan of each type of manufacturing. Research on evolution of employment spatial structure shows that the distribution of manufacturing employment in Shanghai metropolitan area has been suburbanized and the new center has appeared. Due to various factors, different types of manufacturing enterprises show different spatial patterns. Research on the determinants of manufacturing employments shows that location, transportation, cost and the policy have significant effects in the distribution of manufacturing employment while the effects of each type of manufacturing are different.
