This article reviews the basic principle of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and its applications on monitoring of the heavy metals pollution of water. The advantages and disadvantages of single pulse LIBS and double pulse LIBS technologies were compared. The technical development and problems existed there were discussed. At the same time, the research works in our group and the new results obtained were introduced. The trace heavy metal ions, Cr^3+、Mn^2+、Cu^2+、Zn^2+、Cd^2+ and Pb^2+ in water were electrically deposited on the surface of a high purity aluminum rod and then analyzed with LIBS to enhance their spectral detection sensitivity significantly. The limits of detection of these ions were determined to be 0.16-1.35μg/L.
