Due to high price of the medical devices and the large space that the services require, conventional health diagnostics are generally restricted to be used only in hospitals. The cost of the services is thus high and complicated examination procedures are involved. So far, it is still extremely difficult to put such methods into popular use by general public. With this in mind, the new conceptual DIY(Do-It-Yourself) technology, which is aimed to collect an individual's health information at any time and anywhere, becomes a big concern. The realization of low cost devices which can be massively produced is the key solution. Owing to the global prevalence of computer and internet, as well as the universal instrument elements being provided, a series of low-cost terminal medical sensors and corresponding software supporting system can be developed according to various specific requirements. This will make it possible to assess personal health status through a timely and DIY way. This article discusses the concept and modality for developing a low-cost health monitoring DIY technology based on personal computer and network. With respect to latest technical advancements, some proposals are evaluated and future prospective progresses in this area are suggested.
