The genus of snub-nosed monkey comprises five species that are only distributed in very limited areas in China, Vietnam and Myanmar. Tokin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) is endemic to northern Vietnam; the Burmese snub-nosed monkey (R. strykeri) was recently found in northern Burma (Myanmar) and adjacent parts of China; the other three species, Guizhou snub-nosed monkey (R. brelichi), Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (R. roxellana) and Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (R. bieti), are endemic to China (Fig. 1). Each species of snub-nosed monkeys is among the most endangered species in the world and is a public hot topic and national pride. Pro- tection of snub-nosed monkeys as 'umbrella' species therefore is both biologically and culturally effective way to preserve the whole ecosystems of their native countries [1]. Here, we attempt to briefly summarize recent understanding on socio-ecology, historical distribution changes and possible key factors for the conservation of snub-nosed monkeys.
