Ultrafine silica particles with different morphologies have been prepared in water/toluene/sodium dodecylsulphate/1-pentanol water in oil microemulsion systems by means of penetration reactions and amalgamation reactions. The phase diagrams for the W/O microemulsion were plotted to study the relationship between the W/O microemulsion composition and the preparation conditions. The effects of varying the process and the value of R (ratio by mass of water: (surfactant + co-surfactant)) on the shape and size of the resulting silica particles were studied. A mechanism for the formation of ultrafine silica by the different reaction pathways has been proposed.
