Hyperthermia has long been an important tumor treatment modality, ranked only after radiotherapy and chemotherapy. A series of targeted high intensity thermochemical ablation techniques have been successfully established, starting from some basic operations of localizing release of heat energy during a chemical reaction by some specific chemicals and partial ingredients of biological tissues, which can effectively overcome the ubiquitous shortcomings and problems encountered by conventional heating methods, such as requiring complex structures in equipment, expensive in price, with poor target property, and prone to thermal damages to healthy tissues. The basic principles and features of two typical thermochemical ablation methods (acidlkali reaction enabled thermal ablation and alkali metal enabled thermal ablation) are comprehensively reviewed and the prospects of these techniques are analyzed.
