Rhetoric naturalizing is the main way of expressing Paul de Man’s theory of meaning,whose mystic intuition against meaning grammatization emphasizes the indeterminacy of human epistemic perspective when experiencing events.Between the blindness and insight of reading,de Man advocates the pureness of literary criticism and posits the text as the beginning of reading,aiming at focusing on the performative function in-stead of the stative.In the process of defining meaning,de Man ascribes the situation for meaning -forming to the logic level of reading,instead of the grammatization or the rhetorization on the linguistic level,which is not merely for the description of the context,but for the inquiry into the possibility of meaning -producing.The paper,through the exploration of rhetoric as the original meaning -drive,reveals the epistemological signifi-cance among Paul de Man’s view of rhetoric,western theories of language,and literary reading.
