Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ) is an important spatial unit system for traffic survey and transportation planning. TAZ is often a single system and suitable for surveying and explaining at same time. It is found that different area and geometric shapes of zones will notably affect the forecast results of trip distance and distribution. There are three laws for that. This paper is based on laboratory analysis using hypothetical cities. Some literatures for real cities and regions are also similar to the above three laws indirectly. Three principles for ideal TAZ are put forward in this paper. Surveying zones, calculation zones and explanation zones can be relatively independent and transformed each other by Geographic Information Systems technology. Different types of zones could be suitable to different needs in survey- ing, calculation and explanation.
