Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was extracted to research the NDVI dynamic evolution characteristics aided by GIS technology and remote sensing data of Landsat in the natural scenic area of Emei Mountain. The results showed that the year in 1994 was the boundary. Area vegetation coverage obviously showed a trend : Increasing first but decreasing next. In term of vertical vegetation coverage, in the lower part of the mountain, evergreen broad - leaved forest grew markedly, taking up 41.44 % of the total area, evergreen and deciduous broad - leaved mixed for- est in the middle and lower part of the mountain and needle broadleaf mixed forest in the middle of the mountain, the date of NDVI both concentration distribution in the range of 0.2 - 0.5. In the higher part of the mountain, the NDVI of subalpine coniferous forest was relatively stable, the area where NDVI less than 0.2 was very few.
