The department history and operation principle of simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography separation technology are introduced in details. The SMB process is a non-linear non-ideal multivariable-coupling hybrid system which is a mixed discrete and continuous process. Mathematical models for the calculation of concentration profile in simulated moving bed are described. The major applications of SMB chromatography are also reviewed in fine chemicals, petroleum chemicals and pharmaceuticals fields. At last, the researching status of this technology in our country and the problems existed are presented.
