This paper is intended to investigate how native Mandarin speakers perceive Cantonese tones. Two auditory experiments have been conducted. In experiment I, Mandarin speakers had to classify the tones of Cantonese stimulus words into Mandarin tone categories and evaluate the similarities between them. In experiment Ⅱ, Mandarin speakers had to identify which one of the two Mandarin candidates similar to the Cantonese stimulus. It is showed that the three level tones of Cantonese, yinping/55/, yinqu/33/, and yangqu /22/ were mapped onto Mandarin/55/. The two rising tones of Cantonese, yinshang/35/, and yangshang/13/, were mapped onto Mandarin/35/. The low-falling tone, yangping/21/, and the light rising tone, yangshang /13/ of Cantonese were mapped onto Mandarin/214/to a certain extent. In conclusion, the pattern of pitch has played an important role in the perception of tone by native Mandarin speakers. The register and duration also have impact on the tone perception.
