Drawing on equity theory and relational governance theory, this study examines the effects of distributive justice and trust on alliance performance in an uncertainty environment. The findings from a survey of 271 firms with alliance experiences indicate that distributive justice leads to more trust, and both distributive justice and trust can improve alliance performance. Trust partially mediates the relationship between distributive justice and alliance performance. Distributive justice and trust have stronger positive effects on alliance performance when the environment is more dynamic, whereas they have weaker positive effects on alliance performance when the environment is more complex. These findings provide implications for the relational management of strategic alliances.
