A cyclometalated ligand 6-(4-methylphenyl) 2, 2'-bipyridine(HL) and its platinum (Ⅱ) complex [ Pt(L) Cl] were synthesized and characterized. The complex had two different polymorphs with yellow color [Pt(L)Cl] (y) and red color [Pt (L)Cl] (r). They had the same electronic spectra in solution with emission peak at 580 nm( in CH2Cl2 ) which could be assigned to 3MLCT(metal to ligand charge transfer), while their emission spectra in solid state were different with [Pt(L)Cl] (y) at 630 nm and [Pt(L) Cl] (r) at 686 nm, respectively. The emission spectra for [Pt(L)Cl] (y) can be assigned to 3MLCT transition, while those for [Pt(L)Cl] (r) can be assigned to 3MMLCT(metal-metal to ligand-charge-transfer) transition.
