The effects of different concentrations of Cu2+ and Cu2+ and Zn2+ combinations on CODCr removal performance in activated sludge system were investigated, and the ToxTell biosensor with activated sludge was developed to determine the toxicities of Cu2+ and Cu2+ and Zn2+ combinations. The results showed that there was a stimulative effect on the activated sludge process when Cu2+ concentration was at 5 mg · L-1, and with its concentration increasing the inhibition of CODCr removal efficiency was gradually strengthened. CODCr removal reached its maximum inhibition efficiency at about 1.5 h, and with the extension of aeration time, the CODCr removal efficiency increased gradually. Single Cu2+ and Cu2+ and Zn2+ combination toxicities determined with ToxTell biosensor were in accordance to the CODCr removal inhibition effects, which showed that the ToxTell biosensor could be used well in the early warming determination of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in activated sludge process.
